you have some more Chiefs news today though as well Adam well the Chiefs are using their franchise tag on Pro Bard Trey Smith and a lot of people wondered whether this would be possible some people doubted that they would use a franchise tag on a guard considering that the offensive line franchise tag is about $24 million which automatically makes Trey Smith the highest paid guard in the National Football League in NFL history and a lot of people wondering whether they would trade Trac Smith that’s not the plan the plan is to get a
longterm deal done with Trey Smith and the fact of the matter is I’m sure there are teams across the NFL namely in Chicago that are a little bit disappointed that Trey Smith has the franchise tag but Kansas City knows a good player when it’s sees one and free agency is about not letting your best players get out the door thus the franchise tag on Trey Smith yeah I think most importantly it’s crucial for them to keep their interior three intact yeah cuz that’s where the strength and look and that obviously we’re talking about
Joe Toney then coming back and moving back into left guard and then them fixing the fixing the perimeter positions that offensive tackle you don’t let a guy like Trey Smith who basically many teams had jettisoned in let me just say bypassed in the draft for Fears that maybe some of the conditions that he had coming out of college were going to be something that maybe would limit his Effectiveness once he got to the NFL and Brett Fe in this in the medical department at Kansas City did a fantastic job of getting out ahead
of that and treating that and making sure that was was something that never became an issue for him you take care of guys like that you take care of guys like Creed Humphrey you take care of guys like Joe they have work to do make no mistake about that on the perimeter of this of this team on the offensive line but this is a stepping stone to them trying to go on that Redemption tour in 2025 no question to your point Lewis now the next step is figuring out the tackle position they’re sort of in
the same position they were last year you do have Kingsley Su Mata who they drafted tried out benched do they see development from him do you want to bring in DJ humph and get some competition um but there are other there are other positions on this team that are going to be areas of need because there are so many free agents now if they do get a deal done with Trey Smith you can bring that cap hit down a bit this year but this is still a team what does not have a lot of money and a lot of questions on defense you bring back
Justin Reed who’s become so indispensable to what they do on the back end there’s some I think lesser known maybe underrated players on the defensive line like terson Wharton Derek NY who we don’t talk about a lot with the Chiefs but let me tell you if they’re no longer there because they can’t afford them that absence will be felt and of course Nick Bolton too it’s something to watch for sure on the defensive side we did tell you off the top Travis Kelce expecting to come back how much does he have when it comes to
effectiveness at this point in his career Lewis look I I still think there’s let’s just say if we wanted to equate it to average above average good I still think it’s good Effectiveness he’s not he never was even at the height of his career someone who was a great separation Creator simply because he was a great athlete it was because he was an instinctive football player and someone who played very smart and was in sync with the quarterbacks that he played with I think that’s really what he’s going to rely on at this point in his
career I think the most telling thing though about what he said as to why he wanted to come back I think it affected him even more the fact that there were people on that sideline in that football game looking to him to get them going to kind of snap this malaise that they were in and he couldn’t do it no one could do it I was talking to David Meritt Merritt earlier today the secondary coach and he said it was just one of the weird weirdest things that entire game how that football team just was not able to
really click in the gear and I think Travis probably feels partly responsible for for that because he’s one of the guys who really is responsible for doing that kind of thing and the fact that they couldn’t get it going he just doesn’t want to go out like that look you saw what Patrick Mahomes already did with his haircut right you already saw he’s already sending a message man look this is This Is War this year and these two guys they’re going to be at the Forefront of that I thought that haircut
